under construction, and 6,199 further kilometers projected. The total length of inland water ways now being used for water transportation, according to Maritime Customs last annual report totals 321 miles, and extends to the north, south-east and south-west. Three air routes were reported

These systems have been given careful study with special reference to their potential effect on the develop- ment of Whampoa business. Three projects have developed from such study. One is for a 750,000 picul grain elevator with incidental rice hulling mill, fumigating plant,

weighing and handling facilities for caring for grain which may arrive or leave by water, rail or highway.

Another is a large storage and handling plant for the use of the Salt Gabelle. A third project is a large transfer wharf for the military authorities, where direct interchange can be effected between water carriers and those on the

rails and the highways. The railroad authorities have had extensive areas set aside for their eventual use as easterly

and westerly railroad storage and switching yards, for open-air storage of bulky materials, and for direct transfer between boat and railroad car of bulk commodities. Other

industrial possibilities are a ship building plant with dry

docks and machine shops, a steel plant, a locomotive works,

and several smaller industries.
